These days being vegetarian is becoming more and more popular. People are beginning to realize there are many health benefits associated with consuming a vegetarian diet. There are also more vegetarian options available in supermarkets and in restaurants these days, so being a vegetarian does not mean sacrificing flavor and taste.

First and foremost, ditching meat and becoming a vegetarian brings several important health benefits. Since most vegetarian diets are much lower in saturated fats, vegetarians rarely have problems with obesity or develop type II diabetes. It is estimated that vegetarians consume around 25 percent less fat in their diets than meat eaters.

Since vegetarians tend to eat more healthily, they also tend to avoid problems with cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Much of the cholesterol that is taken in from the diet comes from animal products and over time it can clog up the arteries and place pressure on the heart. A vegetarian diet limits cholesterol intake and keeps blood pumping around the body unhindered.

There is also irrefutable proof that eating vegetarian can prevent certain types of cancer from occurring in the body. Countless studies have shown time and time again that high consumption of fruits and vegetables and lower intake of meat can reduce cancer risk by around 50 percent. The antioxidant properties of some vegetables and especially cruciferous vegetables can protect the body from cancer causing agents.

Eating vegetarian can improve your digestive system and make it work more efficiently. Animal products are more difficult for the body to break down and digest. After a time the digestive system can have trouble eliminating waste properly, which can cause colon, intestinal or stomach cancer. If you are a vegetarian however, the foods you eat can be broken down much more easily and you will be more regular.

Eating meat can not only cause health problems for you, but it can also be detrimental to the environment. Beef and other meat production have a serious impact on the environment. For example, much of the Amazon Jungle is being cut down and destroyed to make space for cattle farms and stations. If you cut out meat, then you are reducing the total global demand for meat. Your contribution may not seem like much, but if many of us make a change we can make a real impact in a positive way.

It has been demonstrated by environmental studies that meat production is one of the worst offenders at causing environmental problems out of all the primary industries. Meat production can cause air and water pollution, land degradation and be responsible for the loss of habitats and species. This is an important reason to stop eating meat and become a vegetarian once and for all.

People who follow a vegetarian diet meal plan tend to have higher life expectancy and remain active and health for longer into their old age. There are several reasons why you should consider starting a vegetarian diet meal plans or at least cutting down substantially on your meat consumption. Not only will you experience better health and quality of life as a vegetarian, but also you will be helping to reduce the significant impact that meat production has on the environment.
