Susana asks: I am interested in anyone giving me some good advice as to whether i should do the Atkins Diet. I have heard real mixed reviews with some people telling me that its very unhealthy and the weight you are losing is only water retention. And then on the other hand im hearing people talk about how much weight they have lost?! For example my mom’s brother who is a Doctor lost 30Lb in 3 months on the diet. So im really confused. Anyone with some good knowledge please help!!

No too much of one thing is not always good
No saw a great doco on it
it works
and it works well\
HOWEVER they are not sure of the long term effects of eating excessive proteins and how it will effect the vital organs including the heart
think about it
I think the idea in principle is a good one. Most people eat way too many carbs and reducing it is good.
However I don’t agree with fad diets and carborhydrates are a very important food group that shouldn’t be reduced to that degree. I advise you try weightwatchers. They also advise you reduce your carbs but to a safer degree and their diet is sensible and your more likely to keep the weight off.
One thing that you must always keep in mind is that if you don’t have will power to control your eating habits, then all the diets in the world won’t do you any good. You will just fall off the wagon, abe revert to your old fat self in nothing flat.
It’s definitely not a good idea! although you’ll see a significant drop in dress size, it’s not a permenant effect. it’s only water that you lose. exercise and eat all foods in moderation in order to achieve your targetted ideal weight.
You will lose weight (because your body is tricked into thinking it’s starving as it’s receiving very little by way of it’s first choice in energy, carbohydrates). You will feel better. But if you think you can go on this and eat all the bacon, cheese and ham you want, you’ll only put stress on your liver and kidneys and shoot your sodium and nitrogen levels through the roof. Treat it like you would anything else. Eat sensible protien. Fish, chicken, turkey… Do not disregard fresh fruits and vegetables. You need them, and their sugar content is not as big of a deal as Atkin’s people tend to think. I’m all for cutting out the simple sugars. But you need fiber, which means at some point, you will need carbs.
Remember, eating food doesn’t make you fat. Not using the food you eat makes you fat. Exercise!
I heard you are not supposed to do it for more than 2 weeks, because it is not baalanced diet. I personally did it for 2 weeks, it worked, but then when I started eating normally I took all the weight back, I guess my metabolism had become a little crazy. Anyway, I think you could base a diet on proteins, without totally excluding carbohydrates: eat a lot of chicken, fish and meat for example, but also have a balanced daily intake of fruit, vegetables, dairies, and reduce fat and carbohydrates (rice, potatoes, bread) but do have some every now and then (some cereals for breakfast daily, a toastie every other day, and one main meal of pasta or risotto per week.) This works for me, it is healthy and it gives you a correct habit of eating.
Did you know that Dr. Atkins died of heart disease and was morbidly obese? You tell me if it’s a good idea.
