Is it okay for a pregnant woman to just eat Lean Cuisine for a meal?

Maeve asks:

Is it okay for a pregnant woman to just eat Lean Cuisine for a meal? I’m not talking about myself, I swear.
She isn’t on a diet, but she is. She’s very worried about her weight because she was thin before she got pregnant. I hope she doesn’t get pregnant again, because I think she’s doing everything she can to not gain weight. One morning she only ate a few donuts and apple slices (apple slices from her dinner the night before) for breakfast. This really angers me.

I wouldn’t recommend it because those types of meals typically have an outrageous amount of sodium. Be careful!

Baby needs a good source of vitamins and nutrients. When the pregnant lady has a “lean cuisine” meal, she isn’t necessarily getting a full plate to feed herself AND the baby. I would tell the pregnant woman to not worry about her weight because doing so could jeopardize the baby’s development.

I hope this helped! Have a great night :)

  2. Alice:

As long as it’s not the ONLY thing that you eat all day, are getting enough calories in the day, and are getting all of the nutrients you need, it really should be fine! They recommend that pregnant women don’t eat too many procesed foods, though.

  3. Halie:

It is okay for a pregnant woman to eat a balanced meal with food from all food groups. she must take her prenatal vitamins, drink plenty of water, and get lots of rest, too. if Lean Cuisine are okay with your OB, then we at Yahoo don’t have a problem.

  4. Kenna:

A pregnant woman should be eating well balanced, very healthy meals. She should not worry about trying to lose weight (in fact she should gain weight). Also, as the person above said, they have lots of sodium. She should talk to her doctor about what kind of meals she should be eating.

  5. Britney:

You and the baby would survive, but why would you risk denying your baby the nutrition it needs?????

  6. Daniella:

Why should a woman worry about her weight while pregnant. Thats about bone-headed.

  7. Lucy:

Those types of meals really aren’t that healthy so I would have to say no. But if that’s though only thing she can hold down it’s better than nothing.

  8. Kathy:

It depends on the woman’s overall health and what she eats at other meals. If she is just trying to control her weight a little by eating Lean Cuisine for one meal a day it shouldn’t be any problem. If she is trying to go on a diet during her pregnancy she should check with her doctor.

  9. Elyssa:

Is the mother on diet? lol! come on?! THE ANSWER IS NO! The mother needs nutrients for herself and for her baby. IF she’s counting calories due to gestational diabetes, lean cuisine is not recomended though. There is a special diet for diabetics. If she is conscious of her weight gain, nothing to worry coz its normal(not to extreme extent of wt. gain).

  10. Ciera:

I used to eat them! I just bought them not to diet but bc I actually like them.

  11. Angie:

It’s fine, those aren’t bad for you. It’s better than ice cream and chips lol!

  12. Sally:

It seems like a lot of the answerers have never looked at a package of Lean Cuisine (or eaten one themselves). You don’t have to be dieting to eat them! It’s not a Slim-Fast shake (that would be a no-no). They’re very nutrituous and are perfectly acceptable as a meal… most of them use vegetables as their main ingredient and they’re low in fat. Like mentioned, it’s better then the junk food that some pregnant women like to binge on.

I agree with others in that prenatal vitamins should be taken in addition to a pregnant women’s diet and be sure that you friend is gaining the appropriate amount of weight throughout the pregnancy. Lean Cuisines are a wonderful way to eat convenient, healthy meals (on occassion, not ALL the time).

  13. Jocelyn:

I’d be really worried about the sodium and preservatives in any frozen meals. Just because they are low calorie/fat doesn’t mean they are healthy.

Lean Cuisines would be ok in moderation, but fresh foods are always better.

  14. Tianna:

No…during pregnancy it is very important to eat according to the food pyramid. i know its hard and i just barely do it but it is beneficial to not only your health, but the babys as well.

  15. Shelly:

You better make sure she is getting those prenatal vits. Doughnuts and apple slices? and she is worried about gaining weight? tell her to not eat fatty foods, eat veggies and fruit and some meat. Cut out the carbs and HIGH fat foods. Doughnuts;(

ask her if she cares more for herself than forher baby…this is kind of concerning. I know you are supposed to eat healthy and excersize, but trying to starve yourself on empty food value is wrong.

  16. Sofia:

I am not familiar with Lean Cuisine but if it is the store diet stuff its probably crap. She should be eating healthy stuff and lots of fish(NOT RAW FISH) for the baby and take vitamins especially FOLIC ACID VERY IMPORTANT.Its Normal to pick up weight when you pregnant it doesn’t mean you can eat a cow just because you are pregnant and it doesn’t mean you are not allowed to do light exercises. But you have to eat healthy. If she eats little but get in all the nutrition and don’t starve herself that should be okay.ps.LEAN CUISINE - Probably has loads of MSG’s in it monosodium glutomate.Very Bad for Mom and Baby read up on it!And the sweet stuff probably has got aspartane very baddd!!!

  17. Magdalena:

I second the sodium comment….but also, apples and doughnuts aren’t that bad of a breakfast. As long as she’s eating and seeing her OBGYN she will be okay as far as nutrients go.

  18. Jadyn:

She’ll probably be fine - think of all those women in third world countries who give birth to healthy babies all the time. Lean Cusine is at least a balanced meal - I don’t think it’s that big of a deal if she’s not eating too much - My friend gained only 15 pounds and had a very healthy seven pound baby. Leave it to her doctor to tell her if she’s not gaining enough weight.

  19. Emily:

She should be eating more, she’s supposed to gain some weight during pregnancy because she’s supporting two people, herself and the baby. She should be eating fruit, veggies, lean meats, taking vitamins, all the food groups.

  20. Mina:

Dieting is not healthy for her or the baby at this time, she can worry about her weight after her child is born, giving the baby what it needs is the most important thing not her damn figure! I say you go to one of her appointments and ask her doctor in front of her, maybe that will wake her up.

  21. Rosemary:

There’s nothing at all wrong with Lean Cuisine for a meal sometimes, depending on what else she eats during the day. There’s certainly worse things, like most fast foods.
It’s much healthier for a pregnant woman to eat small amounts more frequently throughout the day than to eat 3 larger meals.
It also depends on how far along she is. The recommended weight gain is between 25-35 pounds. Maybe less, for a small person. (But more is almost never a good thing).
Most of the weight gain should be in the last trimester, not the first.
I’m sure her doctor or midwife will advise her to increase her caloric intake if she needs to.
