Green tea diet, is it unhealthy? What do you think?

January 8, 2007

Camila asks:

I have been on a green tea diet since 2 months ago. I`m 19, and currently 128 lbs. I`m a pant size 5/6 or 3/4. My goal is to be 110 lbs. The weight I had when I started was 140 lbs. I eat about twice a day and I`m guessing it doesn’t include all the food groups. All those that aren’t familiar with green tea diet, it isn’t about green tea you buy at your local supermarket. It is a specialty green tea that actually has a stronger antioxidant that eliminates carbs and other things that are triggered as being a factor to gain weight. I use this method because my lifestyle of being a college student does not permit me to go to the gym a lot. I know that sounds odd considering that most college students do work out, but I have some added stress and responsibilities that limit my time for myself. All I want to know is this…Is this method of dieting unhealthy for a person like me? Or do you think I should really stick with it?
Sorry I forgot to mention my height… it is 5′4

Green tea HELPS increase your metabolism and burn fat. It is by no means a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise routine. It is merely a SUPPLEMENT. I feel that is is quite healthy to include it into your daily routine. Especially in the morning.

Here’s all you need to lose weight and get healthy. First, you have to realize there is no quick, long lasting weight loss plan or pill that is going to do the trick. It’s purely mental. You have to learn to “Eat to live, don’t live to eat”. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It is, if you understand that you are going to be reprogramming how you think about eating for the next few weeks. Old habits die hard, right? Not really. You get rid of bad habits by replacing them with good habits. If you learn to count your calories, keep calorie intake lower than output, exercise moderately, and eat only healthy food, you will lose weight. That’s a fact. All it takes is repetition. All success stories have this in common: The successful folks among us know how to be patient, persistent, and consistent. Set a goal and stick with it. The benefits of feeling good will outweigh any sense of sacrifice you might feel about having to push away that cake and ice cream. I have never heard of anyone getting sick from a green tea diet but i know the levels of caffeine is not good for you.
i don’t think it’s a smart idea to use this method of dieting for a long period of time but eat right and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Find a green tea that has ECGC in it, and drink that. it boosts the metabolism so you may lose weight faster. however, it still has caffeine in it. so if you want a drink that has the same taste as green tea and the same ECGC in it, there is a flavor of Vitamin Water called “Rescue.” it tastes exactly like green tea, it has zero caffeine, i believe it has less sugar, and ECGC to boost metabolism. so try getting a green tea with ECGC and you should lose weight faster.

Ok all those diet supplements…yes even the herbal ones…yes even the “all natural” ones…are unhealthy, especially if you are substituting them for a healthy lifestyle. don’t ditch the green tea entirely, but you know just drinking a few cups of green tea a day (unsweetened) instead of those pills will help boost your metabolism, as well, and that you know is all natural.

i’ve been drinking green tea religiously for years, and honestly i can’t remember the last time i was sick or had trouble regulating my weight. it’s very good for you. but you also need to be changing your eating habits if you want to stay healthy.

i know it’s hard in college, i’ve been there. but walking to all your classes will keep you slim, and sticking to salads w/ nonfat dressing or some raw veggies and peanut butter in the cafeteria instead of pizza and whatnot will help as well. everybody thinks that if they can’t get to the gym, they can’t work out. do just 30 minutes of walking, yoga, biking, or pilates a day and you’ll see the benefits. even just doing some stretching and sit-ups in the morning will help.

also, you didn’t mention how tall you are. if you want to be 110 pounds, you had better be 5′ to 5′2″. i’m 5′ and i weigh 105, and i am actually trying to gain weight because it looks gross. don’t try to force yourself to get down to a size that won’t be healthy for you.
